I went to my first real Prom yesterday.
And it had it all...
It all started (I think) when me and my roommate L. entered my sports friend H.'s apartment for the first time. His hardwood floors, large living room and huge kitchen were clearly made for a party. We tried to convince him for months to throw a party for which we could dress up and two weeks ago he gave up under our 'peer pressure' (and most likely because he wanted to throw a party anyway) and posted a FB event: Grown Up Prom.
It was Prom like in the movies, high school Prom, those school dances where everybody is dressed up, the ideal occasion to ask the guy, that you have always wanted to ask out, to be your date. Prom pictures, with the Prom poses guided by 'professional photographers' or just by people who had Prom pics experiences: hands on the side, fingers closed and smile :-). Prom included girls wearing corsages, decorations of 'under the sea', a disco ball!, punch with oranges, and of course...dancing, lots of dancing.
It was Prom like in the movies, with Prom Queen and Prom King. With nominations and campaigns (lolly pops, and girls just want to have 'Phan'), with votes and midnight celebration with tiara and crown. With red and green jelly shots (thank you T.), with G&T's (Gin and Tonics, too many for some ;-)), with cheese and crackers. With random FAKE dates (who were getting annoying at some point since they might not have understand the FAKE part of it ;-)), with real high school dates for some, and real high school dresses for others.
It was Prom like in the movies, and it made people nostalgic but most of all it made people enjoy life, it made people happy, celebrating good old times, celebrating good new times. It led to lots of hugging, lots of thank you's, lots of love. And all you need is love :-).
It was Prom like in the movies, and it had it all, and it was good, so good, so good!
And so my sports friend H. threw 'the party he always wanted to throw' for all his friends, and trust me there are many friends. One of those lucky people being me. We still call each other 'sports friend' but truth is: he's so much more than just my sports friend. Yes he taught me all the football, hockey, basketball and baseball rules, and yes we still watch sports together, but he also talks and listens when I need it, he doesn't mind waiting for me to have a very late lunch because I can't get off work earlier, he takes me out disco ball shopping, drives me back home when it's late or when I'm just too tired (lazy?) to walk back to the T. He puts the heater in front of me and gives me the soft blanket because I'm always cold at his place (their heating doesn't work well). He serves me food and drinks when I'm there. He even has bottled water for me :-).
So truth is: my sports friend, H., he's 'Prom Kind', one of a kind.
